SIZE

The Chihuahua is widely recognized as the smallest dog breed. Adults only grow to be 4-6 pounds, with a maximum height of 10 inches. What they lack in size, they more than make up for it with impressive courage and a winning personality.

LIVING SPACE

Chihuahuas are small dogs that don’t require a lot of space or exercise. While they are perfectly suited to a small apartment, they do need regular exercise and fresh air to promote health and happiness. They like to bark, so make sure you have understanding neighbors and permission to keep dogs in your building.

    EXERCISE

Chihuahuas are full of energy but don’t need a lot of exercise to stay healthy. They can live long, happy lives without much running around outdoors. A brisk walk to take care of their daily business should be plenty to keep your Chihuahua in fighting form. Chihuahuas love to lay in the sun or their favorite lap. Please keep in mind that your Chihuahua is fragile and won’t stand up to much in terms of physical play from children or larger pets.

  • Antisocial

    PERSONALITY

Chihuahuas are lively and alert pets with a comical and entertaining nature. They are often described as quirky or eccentric, but Chihuahua owners love them for their personalities above all else. They tend to be suspicious of strangers and can be very possessive. Once you earn a Chihuahua’s love, they will stand by you forever. Some people compare their disposition to terrier breeds.

  • Always monitor

    BEHAVIOR WITH KIDS

This breed is really not ideal for families with young children. They need supervision not only because the Chihuahua is small and frail, but also this breed can be a little too protective when it comes to meeting new acquaintances. If you have older, more responsible children, Chihuahuas can make great pets as long as everyone plays by the rules.

    PROTECTION

Chihuahuas are territorial and will try to protect their home despite their diminutive size. They are highly alert and will often bark at the presence of strangers. Don’t let their small size fool you. Chihuahuas are proud, loyal, and ready for action.

    TRAINING

Chihuahuas are quick learners and will respond well to obedience training. It’s important to instill good habits early in your companion. Some training guides suggest a heavy use of positive reinforcement (i.e. tasty treats) and a 15-minute limit for training sessions. They can be very difficult to housebreak if bad habits set in early.

  • Mute

    BARKING

With proper training and obedience school early in life, some Chihuahuas manage to keep their barking to a minimum. Otherwise, this breed is chatty and vocal. They have a sharp bark that sometimes doesn’t seem to match their size. If you have nosey neighbors and a strict barking policy in your apartment building, be prepared to spend some time on training and reinforcement.

    SHEDDING

Chihuahuas are a shedding breed since they have normal dog fur. Generally, the long haired varieties shed more than the short haired ones, but individual genetics play a role as well. Like most dogs, Chihuahuas shed the most in the spring and fall as they change their summer and winter coats. Brush your Chihuahua regularly to minimize shedding.

    CLIMATE

Chihuahuas are sun loving Mexican dogs that don’t shy away from a little beach time. Like lizards, you can often find a Chihuahua sitting in the sun, catching the rays. They don’t do well in the cold since they are low to the ground and don’t have much natural protection from low temperatures.
